RBT training program - How Fast Can You Finish RBT Training?

Jan 11 / Tara Zeller, MS, BCBA, IBA

At The AppleTree Connection, we often hear this question: “How long will it take me to complete my RBT training?” If you’re eager to start helping children and families as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), you’re not alone! The time it takes to finish the training depends on a few factors, and we’re here to help you understand what to expect.

What Is RBT Training?

Before diving into the timeline, let’s quickly talk about RBT training. RBT stands for Registered Behavior Technician, and the training is designed to provide you with a foundation in behavior analysis - the science of learning and behavior. You will learn to understand how a person's environment affects their behavior. And gain new skills to help your clients live their best lives. The training follows the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) guidelines. You’ll learn about ethical practices, how to implement behavior plans, and strategies for helping individuals improve their skills and communication.

The 40-Hour Requirement

One of the main requirements for becoming an RBT is completing 40 hours of training. This is a standard the BACB sets, so every RBT training program, including ours, adheres to this guideline. But does that mean it will always take 40 hours? Not necessarily, that is just the minimium!

Factors That Affect Your Timeline

The speed at which you finish your RBT training depends on a few key factors:

1. Your Schedule
Are you balancing work, school, or family commitments? If so, you should spread your training over several weeks. On the other hand, if you have more free time, you could complete it faster.

2. RBT Training Program Format
At The AppleTree Connection, we offer self-paced RBT training online and live training with an instructor.

Self-paced - This format lets you learn at your own pace. You can log in and complete modules when it is best for you, whether during your lunch break or late at night. Having this flexibility can help you move through the material faster.

Live Instructor – Learn with a cohort of peers on a set weekly or bi-weekly schedule. The course is paced out for you.

3. Your Learning Style

Some people like to take their time, reviewing each section thoroughly to ensure they’ve absorbed everything. Others prefer to power through the material, revisiting concepts as needed. Either approach works, but it may influence how long it takes to finish.

Average Time to Completion

Most people complete their self-paced RBT training in about two weeks if they dedicate a few hours daily. It might take closer to a month if you’re on a more relaxed schedule. The key is consistency—even working on it a little each day can help you finish faster than expected. Live instructor courses with set schedules can be completed in as little as 4 weeks on a bi-weekly schedule.

Can You Complete RBT Training in a Few Days?

Yes, the BACB mandates the training can be completed in no less than 5 days and no more than 180 days. If you’re motivated and have the time to dedicate, you can focus for eight hours a day and complete the 40-hour requirement in five days. However, remember that rushing through the material may make it harder to retain important concepts. Balance is essential.

Tips for Completing Your RBT Training Faster

Set a Schedule: If doing a self-paced course, schedule specific times to work on your training each day. Treat it like an appointment you can’t miss. If joining a live cohort, be sure to make it to block off that time in your schedule.

Eliminate Distractions: : Find a quiet space where you can focus. Turn off notifications on your phone and let others know you’re unavailable.

Break It Into Chunks: Instead of trying to complete an entire module in one sitting, divide it into smaller sections. This makes the material more manageable.

Stay Motivated: Remind yourself why you’re doing this. Picture yourself helping others and making a difference in their lives.

Beyond the Training: What Comes Next?

After you complete your RBT training, there are a few more steps before you can officially start working as an RBT. You’ll need to:

  • Pass a competency assessment with a qualified supervisor.
  • Apply to the BACB and pass the RBT exam.

These steps ensure you’re fully prepared to provide high-quality care. Make sure you find a company that helps with these next steps.
